Achievements

The Voyage of RapunZpill

National Robotics Competition 2023

First Competition

RapunZpill was a prototype made solely for a research study in 2022. After passionately working on their project, the team, along with their research adviser, saw potential in this innovation and decided to debut in their first competition, where they successfully garnered 3rd place.

RoboSports Tournament 2024

Second Competition

After joining their first ever competition, the researchers reconstructed the prototype by adding new features and increasing its size to further develop the project. They then competed in the RoboSports Tournament held in De La Salle University - Dasmariñas with their newly-constructed version of RapunZpill, finishing 3rd place in the open age category.

Olongapo City Robotics Cup 2024

Third Competition

The Olongapo City Robotics Cup was the team’s first competition held in their city. Through this competition, they were able to interact and showcase their innovation to an even wider audience. The team managed to secure second place, allowing them to qualify to the next competition.

Philippine Robotics Olympiad 2024

Fourth Competition

After placing second in the OCRC, the researchers advanced to the Philippine Robotics Olympiad. The competition was held online after being postponed due to inclement weather. The team finished in third place and was given the opportunity to showcase their project in person, where they met their other competitors from all over the country, each with their own amazing innovations.

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Expo

Recent Competition

The team continued to work on improving their project as they competed in their new competition, STEM Expo 2024 conducted at the University of the Philippines Diliman. The team won their first gold medal, ending as champions in the innovation category.

A Journey of Hard Work, Passion, and Purpose

The greatest achievements of all are far removed from the recognition and praise we have received over the months that we have been working on this project. The fact that our hard work and passion have brought this to life — a prototype designed to help the environment and the people around us in so many ways — gives us a sense of fulfillment that no medals or trophies could ever match.

While we sincerely appreciate all the awards and acknowledgments of our efforts, our biggest accomplishment was already achieved from the very beginning: being able to create something meaningful and impactful.

This journey has been a testament to what curious brains and compassionate hearts can achieve, and we can’t wait to see where it leads us next!

Inspirations

Reasons why RapunZpill was Created

The Philippines' Vulnerability to Oil Spill Pollution

As an archipelagic country, the Philippines is particularly vulnerable to the devastating effects of oil spills. With numerous shipping routes passing through its waters, the risk of pollution is ever-present, threatening both marine life and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

    • The Philippines is surrounded by busy shipping lanes, increasing the likelihood of oil spills.
    • Oil spills can severely damage marine ecosystems, affecting biodiversity and local fishing industries.
    • The country’s coastal communities depend on clean waters for their livelihoods, making oil spill cleanup a top priority.

With such a high risk of contamination, it is crucial to develop effective and sustainable solutions for oil spill management to protect both the environment and the people who depend on it.

The Challenge of Ineffective and Hazardous Oil Spill Cleanup Methods

Despite the severe and long-lasting impact of oil spills on the environment and human health, effective and safe cleanup systems remain scarce. Current methods often rely on labor-intensive processes that expose workers to hazardous conditions, making it crucial to develop a more efficient and safer solution.

    • Traditional oil spill cleanup methods are labor-intensive and pose health risks to workers.
    • Existing solutions are often inefficient and require costly resources to implement.
    • The need for a safe, eco-friendly alternative is urgent to mitigate human and environmental risks.

Addressing these challenges requires innovative thinking and the development of alternative technologies that can effectively clean up oil spills without putting lives or ecosystems at risk.

Innovating Oil Spill Cleanup with Sustainable Biosorbents

Driven by the need for a more efficient and eco-friendly oil spill cleanup system, the research team sought to create a solution using sustainable materials. Their innovation involved harnessing hair, a readily available and highly effective biosorbent, to collect oil, offering a promising alternative to existing methods that remain underdeveloped.

    • Hair is an effective, natural material for absorbing oil, making it a sustainable solution.
    • The use of hair as a biosorbent reduces waste, offering an eco-friendly solution to oil spills.
    • This approach eliminates the need for harmful chemicals and manual labor, improving both safety and efficiency.

By exploring the potential of hair in oil spill cleanup, the team has developed a sustainable and innovative solution that can transform how we address environmental disasters.
